CHAPTER TWELVE
maury
One Week Later
Laura: You ready for a workout?
Me: Yep. Anthony just left.
Laura: Howâd you talk him into leaving?
Me: Told him the baby wanted pastries from the French bakery place near downtown. He grinned at my belly, put his shoes on, and left.
Laura: Lol. Meet me down there in ten.
I put my phone on the couch beside me while I tied my tennis shoes, running back over the past week. After Shannonâs death and subsequent funeral, we put the pride on a light lockdown, and Anthony had gotten extra protective of me. The buddy system was required, and everyone had to check in with at least one buddy every hour. Naturally, Anthony was my buddy, and I was his.
However, lockdown, even light lockdown, was boring as hell. Iâd only been out for the ultrasound to confirm the babyâs due date since my cycles hadnât been carefully recorded⦠after being a survivalist out in the bayou.
The ultrasound had confirmed me to be eleven weeks along, and I still had exhaustion and nausea to excess. Though, I had to admit, they counted pregnancy weeks oddly. Maybe the doc meant when the kiddo was twelve weeks old, I would start feeling better, at least if the fated mates pregnancy went according to normal human pregnancies.
I was eleven weeks in gestation now, but the baby wasnât eleven weeks old. So much to learn and know. And Anthony was right there in the middle of all of it, taking notes, paying as close attention as he could, as heart-warming and cute as he could be, hovering and smothering me with worry.
Because Adrienne was still fucking out there.
I covered a yawn and rubbed a hand over my stomach. Ever since Iâd found out I was carrying a child, I found myself touching the place where the baby was more and more often. I didnât show yet, and my weight really hadnât changed. But it made itself known in all the other ways it could.
I hurried to the basement gym/safe room combo. Anthony had sealed the entrance into the connected basement from our building. He didnât want anybody sneaking up or something. I didnât ask much about it.
The whole pride was on lockdown, and most of the people stayed inside the building now, as often as they could. Shelly waved at me in the breezeway between the apartment building and the art gallery. She was probably headed to her job as the receptionist there.
As she passed me, I remembered something Iâd meant to ask her long ago, so I whirled and jogged after her. âHey, Shelly?â
She turned back toward me with a smile and a grin. âYes, alpha?â
I winced at her word choice, since I still wasnât used to being called alpha. âDid you ever hear anything from Tillie Green? Did she ever try to contact us or anything?â
She frowned and tipped her head to the side. âNo, I donât think she did. Weâve had plenty of other contacts.â
I scowled. âFrom who?â
âFrom everyone who wants to meet the fated mates.
